As we slowly help our participating schools upgrade their kitchen cooking appliances - now moving away from using institutional improved cook stoves (IICS) to electric induction cook stoves - the need to have a safe kitchen building is now a priority.
The value of the appliances is high. This incudes not only the induction cookers, but also a 20KVA voltage stabiliser (very expensive) special stainless steel saucepans, and various energy meters, making such installation a valuable pot for thieves.
Of course, risk is still there, but we feel more at ease now that schools are installing metal and window doors to the kitchen building. The image below shows the recent installation at one of our primary schools in Kampala. We are trying to work on the tidiness also!
